Client- Ministry of Primary Industries-Agriculture development Mega Zones

The Ministry of Primary Industries is establishing an Agriculture Development Mega Zone in Sri Lanka’s Matale District, specifically within an 80-acre site in Wilgamuwa.

Known for producing 18% of Sri Lanka’s pepper, Matale also cultivates crops like mango, banana, papaya, lime, cocoa, and orange in significant quantities.

MIKASO This agro-based processing zone, developed by Mikaso, aims to support the export of value-added products at international standards, ensuring premium prices and stable foreign markets. Reflecting environmental priorities, the site’s sustainable design will consider its role within the broader landscape and ecosystem. A landscape ecology study will assess the proposed development’s impact, guiding a design that preserves natural features as much as possible

The zone will use a grid layout for industrial lots, enhancing navigation, maximizing lot usage per road length, and improving security to protect workers. Recreational and open spaces, distributed as green patches and paths, will create a green/blue structure integrated with the road network to form visual axes and focal points. This green infrastructure will provide shade, air purification, and other environmental benefits, enhancing livability.

Building typologies will vary based on façade, roof, and signage designs, with a range of architectural options aligned with landscaping to create an aesthetically pleasing environment. This approach will help prevent monotony, making the zone more visually engaging and welcoming.
