Location- Kurunegala, Sri Lanka
Built Area- 50 Acres
Category- Public Buildings
Client- General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University
The assignment involved master planning consultancy and comprehensive project coordination for the proposed Northwestern-Kurunegala Campus of General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University. Mikaso produced two optional master plan designs for this modern academic institute, envisioned as an architectural landmark with an innovative learning environment.
Designed as a self-sufficient campus, it will serve both cadets and the public, promoting research, knowledge-sharing, and a natural flow between lecture halls, labs, and social zones. The design integrates nature for openness and sustainability, creating flexible spaces for focus and collaboration.
Following the "open to beyond" concept, the campus defies traditional military architecture, embracing a structured yet organic language
The approach balances formal and informal educational spaces to encourage interaction and discipline, considering contemporary architecture and new technologies. Influenced by the existing coconut and mango cultivation, an 8m x 8m grid minimizes impact on the site, with buildings positioned to preserve the plantation.
In Approach 2, the campus is organized for accessibility, with the main Administration and Faculty buildings anchoring the open terrain and framing views of the coconut groves and Badagamuwa Forest. Fragmented yet symmetrical units with a central courtyard connect via a spine corridor, fostering community and connection. The design merges built and natural elements, creating a campus that inspires collaboration and a sense of shared purpose.
